Washington D.C., The Temperance Tour

Listen to D.C. author Garrett Peck's own commentary as you walk to temperance and Prohibition-related sites in Washington, DC and learn about the national movement to ban alcohol.

We'll start at the Temperance Fountain on 7th Street, NW, and walk through the bustling Penn Quarter and Chinatown neighborhoods to Calvary Baptist Church, site of the Anti-Saloon League's national kickoff meeting in 1895. We'll then guide you through the Victorian neighborhoods of Dupont Circle and Kalorama to the Woodrow Wilson House, the president when Prohibition began in 1920. You'll learn why Prohibition unraveled just 13 years after the "noble experiment" began.

We recommend that you allow three hours for this tour for walking, transportation, and visiting the various sites.

The first part of this audio walking tour will cover:
  • about a half-mile of walking
  • will take, on average, about 1.5 hours

The second part covers:

  • 1 mile of walking
  • takes about 1.5 hours

This narrated Washington audio guide itself runs for about 52 minutes on your MP3 Player

If you'd like to find out more about Temperance and Prohibition and what happened after Repeal then check out Garrett's new book The Prohibition Hangover

book

The Prohibition Hangover

Garrett wrote: C-SPAN 2 Book TV broadcast an overview of my book, The Prohibition Hangover: Alcohol in America from Demon Rum to Cult Cabernet, which covers the unchartered waters of how the U.S. recovered from the "noble experiment" these past 76 years. They recorded me while leading the Temperance Tour, an historic tour of Prohibition-related sites in Washington, DC. You needn't get over a hangover to realize what a doozy Prohibition was for the country. If you missed the show or your TiVo/DVR failed to record it, you can see it online at www.booktv.org.
